Narada is in his celestial wanderings

Even as he is singing the praises of Vishnu, Narada hears and sees a group of beautiful beings weeping – every member of that group has lost a limb or bears some other mark of torment.   They were ragas and raginis, the spirits behind the musical modes. Every time a musician sings with vanity or sings in a wrong manner, the concerned being receives a blow. Thus they had been maimed by many generations of musicians.
